Artist Bio
Ivy Mattson is a functional ceramicist based in Minneapolis, MN. She first experienced clay when earning her BA in Art Education at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. She was a ceramic studio artist at the Plains Art Museum in Fargo, ND, exhibiting work and teaching art in Moorhead before recently moving to Minneapolis. Mattson continues her work in clay at Northern Clay Center, completing the MN New Institute for Ceramic Education Program in 2023. She currently teaches middle and high school art alongside ceramic courses at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts, the Eden Prairie Art Center, and the Northern Clay Center.
Mattson’s wheel thrown and altered pottery is highly decorated, projecting joy, wonder, and curiosity–values that are echoed in her teaching practice. Her love of highly decorated forms began not with clay but through decorating cakes with the women in her family throughout childhood. When she’s not teaching or making, Mattson can be found gleaning inspiration from hikes or baking a new cake recipe.
